TAS Design & Drafting Group reviews customer requirements, specifications, manufacturing constraints and other design inputs to generate comprehensive packaged equipment designs and system layouts. The department develops models and drawings based on the design intent communicated by TAS Project Engineers. These system designs include the appropriate structural, mechanical, electrical, and controls sub-assemblies. Design outputs are communicated through 3D/CAD drawings for the purchase of incorporated components and manufacture of TAS products.
The main function of this position is verification of designer drawings and models to project requirements, TAS, and industry standards. The Checker is responsible for development and improvement of the standards and templates within the department. This is a leadership position within the department which operates with minimum supervision and instruction.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs technical drawing reviews for compliance to design, maintenance, manufacture, installation, operating, safety, and clearance requirements
- Reviews all designer drawings including layouts and section views ensuring accurate BOM’s, callouts, and dimensions
- Reviews dimensions and ensures components are dimensioned adequately to minimize tolerance stack-ups
- Performs non-technical drawing reviews for compliance to standards for borders, blocks, text, CAD standards, notes, call-outs, and view requirements to adequately depict the design intent
- Verifies weld symbols and beam selections are appropriate for their service
- Verifies voltages, wire sizes, and breaker sizes are appropriate for their service
- Verifies equipment access, service, and egress are appropriate
- Verifies value engineered alternatives are incorporated into design drawings
- Develops, improves, and publishes department practices/standards
- As a department technical resource and team leader, acts as a coach and mentor to other designers
- Serves as a design leader, helping reinforce the desired culture and work environment of the department
- Assists department management with setting the direction of the department
- Consistently executes the design process per all department processes from inception to closure
- Attends model reviews per department processes
- Any other responsibility as assigned by TAS
JOB SKILLS:
- A lead designer/checker in package/plant designs and layouts with broad knowledge of technical applications, maintenance, operation, and clearance constraints of structural, mechanical, controls, and electrical equipment systems
- Knowledgeable of codes typically applicable to TAS equipment including NEC, IEC, ASME, AISC, AWS, UMC, OSHA, and building codes etc.
- A self-starter and proficient designer/checker, with experience in mechanical, electrical, structural, and controls systems
RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Typically 12+ years of mechanical, structural, electrical, and controls design experience relevant to manufacture of TAS products
- Hands-on experience in design and drafting using 3D modeling software, preferably SolidWorks, with proficient knowledge of SolidWorks, Inventor, Catia, or Pro-E
- Experience in HVAC, piping design, or industrial plant design is preferred
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- High school diploma
- Associates Degree in a technical discipline or 3D/CAD design is a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Position is at least 80 % to 95% at a desk working with computer. Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Performs other physical activities including use of fingers, sitting, stooping, bending, crouching, talking, hearing and performing repetitive motions. Visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception and field of vision necessary to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal and conduct extensive reading. The incumbent will be subject to inside environmental conditions.
